A thought on packing...

"My tooth-brush is a thing that haunts me when I'm travelling, and makes my life a misery. I dream that I haven't packed it, and wake up in a cold perspiration, and get out of bed and hunt for it. And, in the morning, I pack it before I have used it, and have to unpack again to get it, and it is always the last thing I turn out of the bag; and then I repack and forget it, and have to rush upstairs for it at the last moment and carry it to the railway station wrapped up in my pocket handkerchief."

Jerome K. Jerome, 'Three Men In a Boat', p. 34.

So close, yet so far away

In just under three months time, I'll be on an aeroplane travelling to the UK to begin my studies at the University of Sussex. Relatively speaking, three months isn't a long time at all, but at the moment it feels so far away that it doesn't seem real. I'm sure that soon enough it will be all too real.

At the moment all I can think about is securing accommodation and getting my visa, and also worrying about how much harder the classes I'm taking there will be than the classes I've taken here. I really need to stop worrying about things like that.

Before I begin my studies in mid-September, I'll be spending some time in London, and in areas surrounding Brighton, amassing all the essentials, and also hopefully having some fun too. I'm quite excited, but at the same time, I'm feeling quite nervous about it all. My mum is coming with me to help me settle in; I'm not sure who will be feeling more emotional - she or I - my guess is the former.

I have to say, though, I'm pretty thrilled about the location of the university, just outside of Brighton, and just an hour outside of London by train (or so the internet keeps telling me). Hopefully this will give me many opportunities to travel into the city and be my usual nerdy self - you know, visiting museums, art galleries, bookshops, and seeing plays (and musicals, too, I must admit). I also have had a dream for many years now to be in the audience for a taping of QI (aka the most delightful TV show you've ever seen).

We'll see how it goes.
